Well done, Steve!

The iPad2 was revealed by Steve Jobs today. It’s incredible, no question, but the absolute star was the video for the new cover:

It’s moving to see Steve Jobs returning from medical leave to do this.

Ok here’s my idea:

First I thought why not put 2 iPads on a hinge and use them as linked displays as I use my desktop screens?

  • Double the screen real estate
  • Fold the screens together to shut
  • Fold back-to-back to display to users sitting opposite
  • Rotate 90 degrees and eg use lower screen as soft keyboard or trackpad
  • Flip or drag objects from screen to screen
  • Enhance video conferencing
  • Enhance gaming
  • …..

But why have a physical hinge to join 2 iPads? A lead will do + some smart, embedded magnets to bind 2 iPads in different configurations.

Then why 2 iPads? Make it n iPads.

Then why a lead? Make that something Bluetoothy.

Then why waste the redundant processors by using the 2nd to nth screens as slaves? Scale up the processing and turn n iPads into a supercomputer.

Don’t laugh. It’ll come.

Who-whom, Lenin’s essence of politics, is starkly evident in the recent skirmishes of the war against public employee union parasitism. The shenanigans in Wisconsin are clarifying: Democrats aren’t democrats; they’re who-whomocrats. To fix a problem, you first have to state it clearly. Robert Tracinski does that:

The battle of Wisconsin is about the viability of the Democratic Party, and more: it is about the viability of the basic social ideal of the left.

It is a matter of survival for Democrats in an immediate, practical sense. As Michael Barone explains, the government employees’ unions are a mechanism for siphoning taxpayer dollars into the campaigns of Democratic politicians.

But there is something deeper here than just favor-selling and vote-buying. There is something that almost amounts to a twisted idealism in the Democrats’ crusade. They are fighting, not just to preserve their special privileges, but to preserve a social (Continued)

Mark v Dave on Birther Traction: I win !

– It’s just plain fact that Obama is either hiding his birth certificate or it doesn’t exist and he won’t say so. If you strip away all the distractions (he’s black, he’s an American citizen, he’s President, conservatives dislike him anyway) it’s really just a matter of common sense: you want a job that has a “born in the USA” lock in the Constitution, fine, show your birth certificate like McCain. No birth certificate, no job. This is not brain surgery and it’s not crazy. It’s bleedin’ obvious. Like the man says “The only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide.”

– The birth announcements are evidence that Obama’s parents or grandparents or a Hawaii hospital registrar told the Hawaii health department that Obama had been born. Nothing else. It is untrue that the birth announcements say he was “born here”. Were he born on the moon it’s perfectly feasible that his US mother or grandparents would want to register his birth with their state of residence. 2 of my children were born overseas and we immediately registered that in the USA, incentivised to ensure US citizenship and passport. Like Obama their mother is American and their father a British subject. To quote myself:

You can see the announcement here. It doesn’t say “born in Hawaii” which is the point at issue. There’s no dispute that (Continued)

Did Sarah Palin really just write this?

..this president is too weak, too cautious, too beholden to politics over policy to lead. In this budget, in his refusal to do anything concrete to tackle the looming entitlement debt, in his failure to address the generational injustice, in his blithe indifference to the increasing danger of default, he has betrayed those of us who took him to be a serious president prepared to put the good of the country before his short term political interests. Like his State of the Union, this budget is good short term politics but such a massive pile of fiscal bullshit it makes it perfectly clear that Obama is kicking this vital issue down the road.

To all those under 30 who worked so hard to get this man elected, know this: he just screwed you over. He thinks you’re fools. Either the US will go into default because of Obama’s cowardice, or you will be paying far far more for far far less because this president has no courage when it counts. He let you down. On the critical issue of America’s fiscal crisis, he represents no hope and no change.

No, she didn’t.

Speak clearly and carry a big brain

Here’s the clip of Niall Ferguson talking Egypt on Morning Joe and the Jokettes:

A few thoughts:

1. It reminds me of Chris Christie’s “You should really see me when I’m pissed” adlib in that Obaman pieties get their teeth kicked in with such aplomb that there’s nothing left but to urinate on the body and leave quietly.

2. By the end the MSNBC folk look like sad puppies who’ve had their ball taken away. Their hackneyed gotchas like “What about Bush?” were picked up by Ferguson and used as training aids to display Obama’s cluelessness.

3. Mika Brzezinski defines ‘dumb blonde’. That’s not news, but it’s no comfort that America is now the ‘Mika’ of world affairs.

True words spoken in jest

“Oh, we’re evading that.”

Times have changed:

Sarah Palin is a dumb hottie by Damian Toby Delingpole

Jodphurs. Leather Jodphurs. Rrrrrr… Did Reagan wear leather jodphurs in my waking dreams? No, very seldom. That’s why anyone who understands American politics from the perch of a PhD in the Sociology of Ecstatic Religion knows that Sarah Palin isn’t presidential timber.

You readers think it’s the Telegraph’s job to get Palin elected just because she’s right about everything. Sorry to disappoint. We went to Oxford. We know better. We all went to Oxford, the Damian, the Toby and the Delingpole. She didn’t. She worked her way through several obscure polytechnics in Hicksville, Nowhere, for a degree in, ugh, “journalism”. “Journalism” what’s that? Is it like Mods or Greats for the little people?

Look, simple folk, if a low-church, hottie, phrasemaking mom of 5 like Governor Palin is qualified to be President, then what does that do for the self-esteem of people like us? Did I say “low-church”? Ok, she (Continued)

The anti-Jefferson

The Professor of Life wrote this famous lament in 2009:

The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. Yes, I blame the people who were so in a rush to elect him and make history by electing the first Black man to the presidency. Well look what they have accomplished. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

Now, after the evidence is in, it’s startling that about 45% of likely voters would prefer Obama according to Rasmussen, which is a reputable pollster. (Obama-Romney @ 42-44 and Obama-Palin @ 49-38).

I suppose the near unananimity of blacks and natural leaning of government workers towards the party that bribes them with other people’s money (both groups) is most of that 45%.

Cue quotes from Jefferson:

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Obama is the anti-Jefferson.
